Welcome to New Participants (2008)

Welcome to all the new participants on the New Learning Technologies (NLT) course for semester 1, 2008. You can see some of the posts from participants on the last course - I have decided to leave them here so you can see what others did last time. I look forward to having many more co-authors to this blog!

Wocka has asked about what should be put on a blog. What do you think? This is actually a group blog and, normally an individual starts a blog. Anyone got any thoughts as to what you might post here?

Hi one and all. This is my first blog entry too although I have been an avid journaller on and off for years. In answer to Michael's question...I guess we post things that we think others may be interested in as opposed to more personal diary type entries?
Looking forward to learning lots from the group and hope this finds everyone well.

So what should be put on a blog? I have been asked to visit blogs and leave comments...but so far have done the reading but made no contributions. I thought I would clarify for myself first what a blog is! So I looked it up on Wikipedia of course.
"A blog (an abridgment of the term web log) is a website, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog."
It also says you can add links to other sites. So I am going to give it a go...

Can someon tell me if you can turn this into a hyperlink?

Gill - I don't think you can turn URLs in comments into links. The comments box just accepts plain text I think.

Hi again all,
This is pretty cool stuff though I find I get a bit lost in the maze of bits & pieces between wikis & blogs etc.

Does anyone else find that too or is it just me?

I am trying to experience what our students will have to wade through as they venture through any courses we put together also.

cheers,

Jim

HI all,
I'm with you Jim. As I'm just about to commence another Call Taking course I think it's too much for new students to grapple with this type of technology as well as learn strategies to cope in a new organisation. It could be more relevant to studens in the Despatch course who have been with S.A. Ambulance for some time but I have found that there is some relcutance to take on any more I.T. concepts as they are farily drained working 12 hours shifts in front of a computer. I've also have a bit of trouble with the word verification section & keep going in loops so this does require some patience.

Anita - I take your point about the time it takes to become proficient with this stuff, but like anything else it becomes second nature after a while. And I have found it worth the effort, and I have sneaking suspicion that these skills are going to be required for many in future workplaces - collaborating and networking electronically will be expected.
